Iodine is an essential mineral required by the thyroid gland for the synthesis of thyroid hormones (T4 and T3). The body cannot make these hormones on its own. A deficiency of iodine can result in fatigue, weakness, depression, weight gain and even goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland).
