The simple message I share with all my patients is to support your body naturally so you can “be the best you can be” and have the best chance to fight off illnesses that may come your way.
Build Resilience Through Lifestyle
How can you develop the body’s resilience to infectious disease? Start with exercise. It is free, effective, and encouraged by the CDC. According to a 2019 scientific review published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, moderate to vigorous exercise improves immune response and lowers illness risk. Including a brisk walk, a run, or even an exercise class in your daily routine can make a meaningful difference.
In addition to exercise, focusing on a healthy lifestyle is essential. Eating a well-rounded, whole-food-based diet, reducing stress, drinking plenty of water, and getting enough sleep are all vitally important for supporting your immune system. These habits can help you avoid illness or experience milder symptoms if you do get sick.
Key Immune-Support Nutrients
Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system’s defense mechanisms once a virus enters the body. Research published in the Journal of Investigative Medicine shows that vitamin D promotes protective immunity by stimulating the production of key immune cells. Vitamin D deficiency has also been associated with increased autoimmunity and greater susceptibility to infection.
Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, gained attention as an immune-supporting antioxidant after two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling suggested it could reduce the duration of the common cold and help prevent viral illness. Other antioxidants that support immune health include resveratrol, quercetin, and L-glutamine.
N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) is also widely used. Research published in Biochemical Pharmacology suggests it may inhibit virus replication, including studies involving seasonal influenza A viruses.
Zinc is essential for immune health because it supports the normal development and function of T and B cells, which help fight viral and bacterial infections. A study published in Molecular Medicine found that zinc also supports cells responsible for the body’s innate immune response.
Herbal & Natural Immune Support
Mushroom extracts and elderberry, along with other herbal formulas, can play an important role in immune support. Research published in journals such as the Journal of the American College of Nutrition and Alternative Medicine Review shows that mushrooms like shiitake, reishi, and maitake help stimulate immune function by supporting key immune cells.

Elderberry is also a powerful immune-supporting ingredient. Studies published in the European Cytokine Network, Israel Medical Association Journal, and Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine show it may reduce the severity and duration of influenza symptoms.
